Golden Tips to score High in IELTS Speaking

Are you preparing for IELTS test? Are you facing difficulties in the speaking section of the IELTS?  Here are several proven tips that can help you get through the speaking section of the IELTS.  These tips are both applicable to candidates who are preparing for Academic and General Training IELTS tests.

1       Practice speaking everyday: - Practicing speaking everyday will help you improve your fluency and pronunciation skills.  If your IELTS test is several weeks away, you can also consider joining English classes. But if you do not feel comfortable speaking in front of others, you can consider practicing on various English learning software.

2      Do not give short answers: - You need to give good demonstration of your English speaking skills in your IELTS test in order to score high. When an examiner asks you something, do not give short answers like- yes, no, hmmm, ummm, etc. Speaking section assess the ability of the test takers to speak fluently in academic environment. Always give answers best of your ability to give lasting impressions on an examiner.

3       Know what is expected: - It would be good if you prepare yourself according to the questions asked in the IELTS speaking part.  Know on what basis your speaking will be judged and practice accordingly. Do not cram answers; it will not give good impression. Answer questions in your natural pace.

4        Stay on Topic:- Do not go off the topic when you are speaking. It is important to extend your answers while you are speaking. Do not talk about anything that comes in your mind, but stay focused to the topic.

5         Maintain eye-contact: - Maintain proper eye-contact with the examiner.  It does not mean you need to keep looking at him all the time. But it is normal to have a conversation by looking in his eyes. It helps you get his attention. Moreover, seeing here and there would make you look sloppy and informal.

Start early: - We suggest candidates to start early from home on the test day.  You can expect some traffic on the way so depending upon the distance of test location from your home, start from home at least 30-45 minutes early.  After reaching the test centre, you can get comfortable and take some rest before the speaking session starts.

Don’t be nervous: - It is obvious to get nervous because it is your test day, but you need not to be.  Your nervousness will be reflected in your speaking and can result in getting lower scores. Therefore, prepare well and be confident about yourself on the test day.

Don’t be over-confident:- There is a fine line that differentiates confidence from over-confidence. Definitely, you want to demonstrate best of your abilities, but try to keep it within the test limits. If you use over-complicated grammatical structures or vocabulary, it can do the reverse i.e. bring down your IELTS scores.

Listen to the question carefully: - Always listen to questions carefully. If the examiner asks you talk about a past incidence, ensure you use a past tense.  This can be only done if you listen to the question carefully.

10      Don’t expect from examiner: - Do not expect examiner to prompt you about speaking more.  He will just ask you questions and it will be upon you how to answer the questions.
