Tips to Score High in PTE Speaking ‘Describe Image’
The purpose of the ‘Describe Image’
of the PTE speaking section is to test the ability of the test takers to
describe an image from an academic source. The image may be a picture, graph, map, chart
or table. The type of image will be
stated in the instructions and you will be required to describe the image in
detail. You will be given about 40
seconds to give your response. The
images you will get in this section are authentic images related to academic
subjects in humanities, social or natural sciences. There can be 6 to 7 Describe Image items in
the PTE Academic speaking section depending on the combination of items in a
given test.
Describe an image item type assess
the speaking skills of the test takers in an Academic environment. You will be given scores based on the use of
correct intonation, pronunciation, stress, grammar, fluent speech and speaking
under timed conditions. Describe an
image does not test listening and writing skills and reading skills are only
used to read the instructions.

In this article, we have given below
a list of several useful tips that can help you score high in PTE speaking
‘Describe Image’ section.
1 Read instructions carefully: - The instructions are presented on
the top of the computer screen. You will
be given 25 seconds to look at the image or graph carefully and after 25
seconds, you will hear a tone and microphone will start working. The status of the recording status box will
change to ‘recording’. You will be given
40 seconds to produce your response in the microphone.
2 Take Notes: - You can take notes if required. Candidates are given an
erasable notepad and a pen, where they can write notes if necessary. Do not write complete sentences when you are
writing notes, it will waste your time. Instead, write understandable short
forms and abbreviations.
3 Speak Clearly: - The thumb
rule to score high in the PTE Speaking section is to speak clearly and
confidently. Before you start speaking,
take a deep breath. Speak at your normal pace and don’t rush to conclude
things. A clear and concise will always
make you score high than a rushed one.
4 Conclude it: - You will be given
40 seconds to complete the PTE speaking ‘Describe Image’ task. In this time, describe image completely and
thoroughly. Do not forget to conclude
your description at the end. It can include something remarkable or notable
about the picture or the graph.
5 Practice: - We advise you to practice speaking on different topics
and images. This will help you know
what to talk about and what all things need to be included. Practice will also
help you develop your speaking skills for the PTE test.
